Gender and Women’s Studies

The significance of gender.

This is your chance to explore the significance of gender—as well as other categories of identity—in diverse historical and contemporary social and political contexts. The gender and women’s studies minor at Northland is distinguished by its interdisciplinary nature: you might be taking courses in philosophy, history, Native American studies, sociology, sustainable community development, psychology, or outdoor education—all disciplines that raise questions regarding gender that will help you achieve an understanding of the complexity of the world.

Explore questions such as how gender is constructed and represented through language, individual behavior, and social and cultural institutions; how ideas of gender roles influence human interactions with the natural world; and how people can recognize and transform the thought structures that shape our knowledge and action.

This minor provides opportunities for applied research, volunteering, and internships. Your studies will leave you prepared for graduate school and for employment in a variety of professions.
