The cell and molecular biology emphasis focuses on the fundamental building blocks of life, from the smallest components of cells to complex genetic mechanisms. Students study genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology, gaining a deep understanding of how cells function, communicate, and adapt in various environments. This emphasis prepares students for careers in biotechnology, medical research, government, and more.

In the ecology, evolution, and organismal biology emphasis, students explore the diversity of life on Earth and the processes that shape it over time. From ecosystems and biodiversity to evolutionary theory and behavior, students learn about the interconnectedness of organisms and their environments. Students in this emphasis can enjoy courses that study mammals, insects, birds, plants, and more. Field work and research opportunities allow students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world ecological challenges, preparing them for careers in conservation, environmental science, wildlife biology, and ecological research.

In the health emphasis, students explore the foundations of human and veterinary medical fields with coursework and hands-on experiences that prepare them for graduate programs in medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, physical therapy, athletic training, and more. Some of the courses students have the opportunity to take include exploration of topics like parasitology, wildlife disease, embryology, and certification in wildlife immobilization and handling. At Northland College, we also offer courses in chemistry, physics, math, and more to fulfill admission requirements and prerequisites for professional graduate programs. The biology program also works to ensure students have opportunities for research and internships.
