Girls Empowered Leadership and Adventure: Backpack—Isle Royale is for girls 13–15 years old interested in a seven-day wilderness backpacking experience with peers on one of the most beautiful islands on Earth! For seven days and six nights, we will camp on Isle Royale, learning about ourselves, each other, and the island while taking in the pristine beauty of Lake Superior.

Participants should plan on six days of travel, hiking 3–10 miles a day, with plenty of time to enjoy our time on the island and our campsite. Program staff—who are seasoned outdoor guides—are familiar with the cultural and natural history of the region and will share the stories of the national park throughout our seven days together. We will also make time for art and stewardship as we travel throughout the island. This trip is open to beginner backpackers!

Participants must fill this out to be considered for the program. We do expect that students who are registering for this program are interested in backpacking in a wilderness setting and look forward to being a member of a small community of adventurers for a week. Together, we will share in the unique experience of traveling to Isle Royale by ferry, hike and live on the island for seven days, and give back through a group stewardship project. This is an opportunity to give back to Lake Superior, Isle Royale, the plants and animals of the island, and to future generations.

Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute outings and trips are open to participants who are able to meet the Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC). Accommodations may be made as long as it does not compromise the health or safety of staff members or other participants or significantly alter the fundamental intended outcomes of the program.

Essential Eligibility Criteria are not intended to be exclusionary, but to honestly identify the basic and fundamental elements of outing or trip participation that are integrally tied to safety and risk management considerations. These criteria are the essential skills that each participant is required to perform for safety in each type of program offered and are applied equally to all potential participants.

Please note: cancellations made fourteen (14) days or more before the event will result in a full refund. Cancellations after fourteen (14) days receive no refund. However, at the discretion of the program coordinator, a refund may be offered. If SOEI Youth Outreach programs need to cancel a full refund will be issued.
