History of Northland College

Founded in 1892, Northland College was an accredited, private, nonprofit liberal arts college known for its deep commitment to the environment and sustainability. Situated just blocks from Lake Superior, the College offered students hands-on learning opportunities rooted in the natural world and informed by a strong sense of place.

Northland welcomed students from all backgrounds and encouraged critical thinking, civic engagement, and a lifelong dedication to making a difference. It became a leader in environmental studies, conservation, and climate resilience—long before these topics became part of mainstream discourse.
