Financial Aid & Student Billing

What will happen to my student loans?

Students will still be responsible for the loans borrowed while at Northland. If students choose to enroll at a transfer or teach-out institution, the new institution will automatically report students’ enrollment, but it is the student’s responsibility to follow up with the loan servicer.

Will my financial aid change if I move to a different college or university?

For students going to a teach-out institution, financial aid will generally not change. Students who transfer to a non-teach partner institution may receive a change in costs and financial aid.

What about Pell Grant eligibility?

The amount of Federal Pell Grant funds you may receive over your lifetime is limited by federal law to be the equivalent of six years of Pell Grant funding.

Will my nonfederal loans through private lenders be discharged?

Information provided on this page pertains only to your federal student loans. You will need to contact the private lender that made the loan to discuss your options.

How do I obtain a closed school discharge?

You may be eligible for a Closed School Loan Discharge. Visit https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/closed-school to review all criteria and application requirements.

What if I owe Northland money? Do I still have to pay?

Yes, students with outstanding balances still have a legal obligation to pay those balances. Students can establish a payment plan to address these balances.

Community Members

What will happen to the campus?

Northland College continues to undertake the complicated and highly regulated process of closing an institution of higher education. This has involved inventorying of assets, preparing final reports for federal agencies which regulate our industry, analyzing the endowment, finalizing financial records, preparing real estate for sale, and determining the proper disposition of everything the College owns.

While we are involved in all aspects related to this work and the College, it is taking time to complete what needs to be done.

We appreciate the eagerness of the many requests and inquiries that we continue to receive. We are responsible for adhering to regulations and will continue to work through the process and details. We are mindful of the community and inquiries and will reach out when appropriate to discuss how to address them.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to complete these tasks to the best of our ability.
