Northland is pleased to host the 12th Biennial Lake Superior Youth Symposium, April 27-30, 2017. Grades 8-12 students and their teachers from throughout the Lake Superior watershed, including the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the province of Ontario, are invited to participate in the symposium. Participants can expect to leave with a new understanding of the Lake Superior Basin—its people, history, culture, and science—and their relationship with it and with each other as future caretakers. Take a look at past symposiums.

Stewardship & Research Project Presentation Application

One way to inspire students to become active stewards and scientists of Lake Superior and the Great Lakes is to have them learn from their peers. Many students throughout the Lake Superior and Great Lakes watersheds have already been involved with stewardship projects and conducted inspiring research that we would like symposium participants to learn about.

To encourage student groups to present, the Steering Committee is offering up to 10 stipends of $100 per group to assist with registration and travel expenses for attending students from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, and Ontario.

Students groups that receive a stipend must be prepared to conduct a 10-minute presentation at the symposium explaining their project to attendees, followed by participation in a poster viewing session where students will be available to answer questions about their project.

Application Process

To apply, student groups must complete the three-part application form.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrates initiative, creativity, and commitment of students on behalf of environmental education, scientific research, and/or environmental protection.
  • Demonstrates collaboration with community organizations or units of government
  • Has had a positive impact on the community and/or natural resources of the Lake Superior watershed through stewardship or scientific contribution.
