Northland College students and their professor have recently embarked on a study of the behavior of the gray fox in the Chequamegon Bay region, and are seeking community help for their research project. They are only interested in sightings in Ashland and Bayfield counties.

Students Kara Winter and Michaela Fisher, with oversight from Professor of Natural Resources Erik Olson are heading the research effort. They hope to expand the number of study sites with the help of local community members.

Students would like to hear from people who have had a gray fox observation or have heard of a friend or neighbor seeing one. Researchers are particularly interested in the following observational details:

• A physical description of the fox observed, or a photograph if available;
• A description of the observation itself, including the time and date of the encounter;
• Location of the observation: describe the location in clear detail and if possible include latitude and longitudinal references, which can be derived from GoogleMaps;

Completed observations with the above details can be emailed to grayfoxproject@northland.edu.

Researchers request that all submitted observational information be as detailed as possible, especially with regard to location since reported locations may be assessed as a potential study site to help students and researchers better understand the behavior of this interesting animal.
