Four high school seniors have been awarded full-tuition scholarships as part of the Sigurd Olson Scholars program at Northland College. Sigurd F. Olson was a pioneering figure in the American environmental movement and an important figure to a generation of activists and trailblazers. An alumnus of Northland College, Olson drew on his liberal arts education throughout life to respond to both personal and societal challenges.
“He distinguished himself as a scientist, teacher, businessman, political advisor, and bestselling author. In everything he did, he affirmed the importance of the wildness and wonder inherent in nature,” said Alan Brew, executive director of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute. “The Scholars program at Northland College exists to carry this legacy of leadership, creativity, and love for the natural world far into the twenty-first century.”
