Northland College will host a panel discussion and observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day Monday, October 9 at 7 p.m.

In 2016, the College declared the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, to focus on a more historically accurate perspective, regarding the beginnings of European and American interaction, respecting the history and culture of Native American people.

The City of Ashland, Ashland School District, Bayfield County, and the City of Washburn have passed or are in the process of adopting similar proclamations. Civic leaders and concerned individuals will comprise a panel to discuss the significance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

“The purpose of the event is to discuss how to collaborate, around the Bay for, future celebrations and improved intercultural communication, representation, and relations,” said Katrina Werchouski, director of the Northland College Indigenous Cultures Center.

The event is free and members from all communities are invited and encouraged to attend.
