In the heart of Wisconsin’s north woods, Northland College stands out not only as an educational institution, but also as a community cornerstone that connects students to Ashland through rich and meaningful experiences. Through service, internships, athletics, and local events, Northland students become an integral part of Ashland, forming bonds that often last a lifetime. Kodie Rempp, a senior at Northland majoring in business and psychology with a minor in sports management, exemplifies the strong connection many students and alumni share with the area.
Originally from Harrison, Nebraska, Kodie came to Northland seeking an intimate campus atmosphere and a chance to experience the natural beauty of the Great Lakes region. Since her arrival, Ashland has become a true home, enriched by her studies, her commitment to athletics, and her active engagement in the community. “I came here because I wanted to experience more of the world while still having a sense of community,” she says. “Ashland has given me that, and it’s hard to imagine being anywhere else.”
As an athlete at Northland, Kodie’s commitment to community shines brightly through her work with young athletes at summer camps and events during the school year. She often finds herself mentoring children of Northland alumni, building multigenerational connections that emphasize Northland’s legacy of community involvement and care. “It’s inspiring to meet the kids of alumni who once played on these same courts,” Kodie shares. “There’s a sense of continuity and belonging that I hope to pass on to the next generation.”
In addition to sports and mentorship, Kodie has immersed herself in meaningful internships that allow her to explore her career aspirations. She is currently interning at the Ashland County District Attorney’s Office under DA Blake Gross, gaining hands-on experience in the legal field. “Working alongside local professionals has shown me what a future in a small town can look like,” says Kodie. “The people here create a strong sense of purpose and belonging.”
Kodie’s experiences reflect the broader ethos of Northland College, where students embrace their surroundings. Her involvement in organizing Northland’s Winter Fest alongside the City of Ashland exemplifies the College’s commitment to fostering connections that bring students, alumni, and the larger community together. “Events like Winter Fest are a way to connect past and present, uniting alumni, students, and faculty,” she explains. “Seeing alumni return and hearing how they still feel deeply connected to Ashland shows how Northland creates a close-knit bonds that last a lifetime.”
For students like Kodie, Northland’s proximity to Lake Superior and the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest deepens their bond with the region’s natural beauty. Kodie recalls her first plunge into Lake Superior at Houghton Falls, a moment she treasures. “The lake is a huge part of life here!” she exclaims.
The blend of academics, service, and outdoor experiences inspires many Northland students to make Ashland their long-term home. Northland alumni actively contribute to the area’s vitality, serving in fields from environmental conservation to local business and education. These enduring connections demonstrate Northland’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community care.
“Northland is about building connections—both with people and with place,” Kodie reflects. “I know that wherever I end up, Ashland and the people here will always be a part of my story.”
