On behalf of Northland College, I wanted to share the latest developments regarding our beloved institution. The journey we’ve embarked upon over the past few months has been challenging, but it has also revealed the unwavering commitment of our community and the vital role that donor support continues to play in our success.
In March 2024, Northland College faced a significant financial crisis, prompting the Board of Trustees to launch a $12 million fundraising appeal to secure our future. Through the extraordinary generosity of over one thousand donors, we raised nearly $1.5 million—a record for our College. Yet, despite this outpouring of support, the situation required deeper action, leading to the declaration of financial exigency on April 4.
This declaration was not a sign of closure but rather a call to action—an acknowledgment of the urgent need for sustainable solutions. Since then, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members rallied together, contributing ideas and advocating passionately for Northland’s future.
Donor Impact: Continuing to Fuel Our Mission
Your support has already made a direct and profound impact on our students’ experiences. It’s because of donors like you that we can continue offering research opportunities that allow students to work closely with faculty on environmental studies projects—whether it’s monitoring the health of local watersheds or researching climate change adaptation strategies right here in the north woods.
Donors have also enabled us to provide real-world experiences through internships and partnerships with local organizations, giving students hands-on experience that prepares them to become leaders in a variety of fields including conservation, business, and sustainability.
And, of course, your contributions allow us to take full advantage of the natural classroom that surrounds us. From fieldwork in the Apostle Islands to creating dynamic programs for students and community members through Outdoor Pursuits at the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, our students are gaining an education deeply rooted in the unique landscape of northern Wisconsin on the southern shores of Lake Superior.
Looking Forward: How You Can Continue to Help
While we have made incredible strides, the work is not done. Northland’s path forward will require the continued generosity and commitment of those who believe in the transformational power of our mission. As we move ahead with a streamlined curriculum, focusing on nine high-demand majors aligned with our values, your ongoing support will be crucial. Your contributions ensure we can offer the experiences that set Northland apart—experiences that challenge our students to think critically, act with courage, and lead with integrity.
As we move forward through this academic year, I invite you to continue standing with us. Your partnership will allow us to keep providing the unique educational experiences that have shaped generations of environmental leaders. Together, we will build a sustainable future for Northland—one that honors our history while embracing the opportunities ahead.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Chad Dayton
