The Mary Griggs Burke Center for Freshwater Innovation is pleased to welcome Peter Levi, PhD, as its new associate director of inland lakes. Levi was an associate professor at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and brings nearly twenty years of research and teaching experience to the Burke Center. He started working remotely in March, but he and his family moved to Ashland, Wisconsin, in June.
“We are very excited to welcome Dr. Levi to the Burke family,” said Burke Center Director Peter Annin. “He has expansive expertise in freshwater ecosystems, and his passion for mentoring undergraduate researchers makes him a perfect fit for our team.”
Levi has a BA from Lawrence University and a PhD from the University of Notre Dame. He was a post-doctoral scholar at Aarhus University in Denmark, and a research fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Limnology prior to his appointment at Drake. His research has focused on a variety of freshwater systems, including lakes, streams, and reservoirs, with field projects throughout the Midwest, as well as Alaska, Ghana, and Indonesia. He also serves as treasurer for the Society for Freshwater Science.
“I am thrilled to be in the north woods of Wisconsin where I can work on high-quality freshwater systems with passionate students,” Levi said. “And as native Wisconsinites, my spouse and I are excited to raise our family on the shores of Lake Superior.”
Levi will lead the center’s inland lakes research program, as well as oversee the Burke analytical laboratory. His work will help further the Burke Center’s freshwater research in northwest Wisconsin, while fostering the next generation of multi-disciplinary freshwater scientists at Northland.
