The Journey of the Jamaican Musher

Jamaican Newton Marshall is a four-time Iditarod finisher and two-time Yukon Quest finisher. He was also awarded the Iditarod sportsmanship award for saving someone’s life on the coast and he ran Lance Mackey’s team and worked with Lance Mackey. He is coming into town for the Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race and has agreed to share the stories of his journey in dogsledding and education. Assisting Small-Scale Vegetable Growers in Malawi

Tom Syverud will give a presentation on his work in Southern Africa as part of USAID. Tom has been involved in the Farmer to Farmer education program for the past twenty years, most recently providing assistance to small scale vegetable farmers in Malawi. His presentation will describe his work with a coop of 30 farmers growing mixed vegetables and their efforts to reduce problems associated with complications caused by climate change, and relate how similar these issues are to vegetable production here in…

For generations, Native people in the Great Lakes region utilized prescribed fire to improve habitat, increase blueberry production, and clear the understory of vegetation. These frequent, low-intensity fires promoted fire adapted and dependent ecosystems. The medicines, species abundance and diversity, and foods created are what our Anishinaabe culture is rooted in. World Water Day: Freshwater Plastic Pollution

Dr. Sherri “Sam” Mason is a professor of chemistry and leading researcher in freshwater plastic pollution. Her award-winning work has drawn international attention to the threats posed by microplastics and led to the passage of national measures banning microbeads.
