Northland College invites applications for an instructor or tenure-track assistant or associate professor appointment in socially responsible management. We are looking for a candidate with expertise on the development, management, and leadership of mission-based enterprises in the private, public, or nonprofit sectors. Our ideal candidate will reflect the College’s commitment to social and environmental justice through their teaching, research, and engagement. We welcome applicants from a variety of academic disciplines, especially those with expertise in organizational behavior and leadership, management, corporate social responsibility, or sustainable development. This is a full-time position that is expected to begin in August 2023.
Northland College is a private liberal arts college with a progressive focus on the environment and sustainability. The College enrolls 550 students with fifty full-time faculty and is in Ashland, Wisconsin, on the south shore of Lake Superior. Ashland is sixty miles from the Twin Ports of Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin. Outdoor Life magazine ranks Ashland as one of the top places to live and enjoy the four seasons outdoors. Adjacent to the Apostle Islands and over one million acres of national forest, the College’s distinct setting has inspired its commitment to explore the fundamental interconnections of nature, place, and people. The region is home to a strong local foods movement, growing sustainable tourism industry, and vibrant arts and cultural community.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
The successful candidate will contribute to the unique business management undergraduate degree program that is grounded in Northland College’s environmental liberal arts mission. As a teaching-focused college, we are seeking a candidate with the ability to teach a few established core offerings within the program on an annual basis. The successful candidate will be able to choose from Organizational Behavior, Human Resources Management, the Legal and Ethical Environment of Business, Corporate Social Responsibility, Marketing for Sustainability, Managerial Finance, and/or Fundamentals of Accounting in this respect. The candidate will also be encouraged to develop and offer upper-level courses in their area of expertise. We especially welcome applications from candidates that can offer expertise in topics that complement other programs such as outdoor recreation management, agriculture management, or arts management.
A successful candidate at the instructor level will be expected to teach seven courses each academic year (3-3-1), coordinate the business management program beginning in their second year, advise undergraduate students, stay current with pedagogical practice in the business field, and serve the faculty and College as needed.
In addition to those duties, a successful tenure-track candidate at the assistant or associate professor level will be expected to maintain an active research agenda that strengthens Northland’s mission to address the environmental and social challenges of our time. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with faculty and students across Northland College’s interdisciplinary centers for excellence, including the Hulings Rice Food Center and the Center for Rural Communities.
