Join the talented duo—naturalist Emily Stone and artist Janet Moore—for this exciting combination of art and science. In the classroom, participants will discover the beautiful details present in leafless twigs. Then venture outside to apply that discovery to winter trees while investigating birds and animal tracks. Emily will inspire you with her knowledge of the hidden mysteries of winter.

Enjoy a hearty lunch, then practice drawing techniques through guided exercises with Janet Moore. Participants will learn botanical illustration to communicate their outdoor experiences. This workshop takes place at Forest Lodge, a unique and historic estate nestled among 872 acres of majestic forest in the heart of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and situated along the pristine shores of Lake Namekagon. The old growth forest and quiet landscape is sure to relax and inspire you.

Participants Must Bring
Winter clothing and boots for an outdoor walk, notebook, pen eraser, heavyweight all-purpose sketchbook or similar paper (not rough paper), ultra-thin permanent pens (non-bleed) such as Micron (size: 005, 01, 03 and 05), and various hardness pencils (1B, H 2H).

Meet Your Instructors
Emily M. Stone is naturalist and education director at the Cable Natural History Museum, and author of the popular “Natural Connections” newspaper column, which is published across Wisconsin and Minnesota. She captures the adventure and conveys the science behind our north woods nature with crowd-pleasing style. Her first book, Natural Connections: Exploring Northwoods Nature through Science and Your Senses, will be published this year. Emily received a BS in outdoor education from Northland College and an MS in the Field Naturalist Program at the University of Vermont. She also contributes to Cross Country Skier Magazine.

Janet Moore has been painting botanical subjects and landscapes in watercolor for over twenty years. She earned a BS in art as well as a BS in environmental studies at UW-Madison, and finds her combined training and experience in both fields enhances and informs her work. Janet’s environmental education degree was focused on researching the value of drawing as a learning tool in science. She has worked as an educator for the UW-Madison Arboretum’s Earth Partnerships for Schools program, the LEAF k-12 School Forestry Program, and as an independent presenter, teacher, and consultant for art, nature, and science integration. janetmooreart.com
