Sail the Apostle Islands

June 9June 14

Summer high school programs, Sailing on Lake Superior

Ahoy! Raise the mainsail, unfurl the jib, and let the journey begin. Sail aboard the tall ship Abbey Road during five days of navigation through the deep waters of Lake Superior. Take your turn at the helm, discover duties of the cabin, and learn sailboat anatomy including halyard, lifeline, keel, and transom.

Experience fantastic sea caves, hike the islands, relax on sandy beaches and get lost in the vast night sky of the Apostle Islands. Develop your sailing and navigation skills as you work with your crewmates to sail the Abbey from one beautiful island to the next.

Students should understand the rustic nature of the accommodations and the potential for challenging weather conditions. There is no shower onboard and all hot water is heated on the stove. Although the Abbey Road is a spacious fifty-two footer, students have limited personal space.

The Abbey Road has an open cabin layout and males and females have separate sleeping quarters. Temperatures on land may be in the 60s and 70s, however, temperatures on the water can easily dip into the low 40’s and even 30’s due to the cold lake temperature in June. Proper clothing is required—please refer to the packing list we provide.
