Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute outings and trips are open to all Northland College students, staff, and faculty who are able to meet the Essential Eligibility Criteria. Accommodations may be made as long as it does not compromise the health or safety of staff members or other participants or significantly alter the fundamental intended outcomes of the program.

Essential Eligibility Criteria are not intended to be exclusionary, but to honestly identify the basic and fundamental elements of outing or trip participation that are integrally tied to safety and risk management considerations. These criteria are the essential skills that each participant is required to perform for safety in each type of program offered and are applied equally to all potential participants.

Participant Agreement

Please review the Participant Agreement carefully before signing. It contains important information about the programs at Northland College, and affects the legal rights of participants and families in the event of an injury or other loss.

All students, volunteers, and guests fourteen (14) years of age and older must sign below. If the Participant is a minor —under eighteen (18) years of age—a parent or legal guardian of that minor must also sign, for themselves, and on behalf of the minor.

Refund Policy

Cancellations made prior to seven (7) days before the event will result in a full refund.

Cancellations after seven (7) days receive no refund. However, at the discretion of the program coordinator, a refund may be offered in the following circumstance:

Short term illness or injury: If a short-term illness or injury prevents the participant from attending the scheduled session, the participant may reschedule to another session of equal or lesser value, during the same year only, provided space is available. If the new session has a higher value than the original session, the participant must pay the difference in tuition. Refunds will not be provided for transferring into a session of lesser value.

SOEI program sessions cancelled by Northland College will receive a full refund.
