Northern Lights at the Bay Theater
January 31, 2019, 6:30 pm–8:30 pm
Filmmaker John Hanson will join us for the screening of his award-winning film Northern Lights in the 128-seat Bay Theater in downtown Ashland. Northern Lights won the 1979 Camera d’Or for Best First Feature at the Cannes International Film Festival. This important and historical film was restored and digitized in 2013, and now for the first time in this region, will be shown on a big screen.
“Whether this theatrical restoration introduces or re-introduces you to Hanson and Nilsson’s landmark American independent drama, the fact remains that it is a cause for celebration,” writes Michael Tully in his review.
Hanson received the Distinguished Achievement Award from Carleton College and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Northland College. He is past Chair and current board member of the Wisconsin Humanities Council. He was a founding member of Cine Manifest, a seminal independent film collective in San Francisco and the Independent Feature Project. He lives in Bayfield, Wisconsin.
Sponsored by the Mary Elizabeth Anderson Hulings Distinguished Chair in the Humanities, this film is free and open to the public. We expect this event will fill up so please arrive early.
