Geology Field Trip: Exploring the Bayfield Peninsula

June 23, 9:00 am4:00 pm

The sediments and landforms of the Bayfield Peninsula preserve an excellent record of the melting of glacial ice, deposition of glacial-age sediments, and changing shorelines during the retreat of the last glacial ice in the region about 13,000 years ago. These diverse sediments and the soils developed on them have a large influence on the drainage and ecosystems today.

On this day trip we will explore the sandy soils of the uplands in the interior of the peninsula, old beach terraces produced by high lake levels in the Lake Superior basin, clay-rich soils of the lowlands, and the soils, rivers, lakes, and wells that owe their existence to the glacial geology. Participants must be able to walk on uneven ground. No strenuous hiking or lengthy walks of more than one mile are included in this program. Transportation and lunch included.

Meet Your Instructor
Tom Fitz has been studying the geology of northern Wisconsin and teaching geoscience at Northland College since 1999. His expertise is in minerals and rocks, geologic history, and the relationship between people and the Earth around them. He earned his BS degree from St. Lawrence University in New York State, his MS degree at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and his PhD from the University of Delaware, all in geology. He is from Massachusetts and came to Wisconsin to work at Northland College and to study the great rocks and explore the beautiful scenery of this region. Tom has worked on a wide variety of research topics with his students, from ancient bedrock to modern soils. He thoroughly enjoys teaching people about the Earth and has earned numerous teaching awards during his career.
