Biography

Earned and Honorary Degrees

BS Environmental Studies and Outdoor Education, Northland College

Background

I have been a professional performing folk/acoustic musician since 1978. I have my own record label: Heartistry Music.

Some venues I have played are: A Prairie Home Companion, Edinburgh Folk Festival, ESPN Great Outdoor Games, Walt Disney World, Weber Music Hall, Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua and many others.

Some people I have been fortunate to play music with onstage and to record music with are: Tom Paxton, John McCutcheon, Molly (Otis) Stoddard, David Wilcox, Larry Long, Bruce Greene, Randy Sabien, Ralph Blizzard and the New Southern Ramblers, Sheila Kay Adams, Bryan Bowers, Don Pedi and many more.

Research

I love the history behind songs and tunes. I have been singing songs from the Great Lakes Lumbering era and Voyageur era since 1975, and I have two self-published books of voyageurs songs. I am currently preparing a multimedia stage show about the rural roots and history of Bluegrass. I also play Renaissance lute and am researching the music of John Dowland.

Why Northland?

Northland is a great community of teachers and students. Its small intimate atmosphere fosters personalized learning and often results in long-term friendships and mentorships in addition to learning.

Courses

MUS 182 01 INDIVIDUAL GUITAR LESSONS is my course, but students are free to bring whatever fretted string instrument they want to learn, or even American/Celtic traditional fiddle.

Student Involvement

One-on-one lessons. You can't get more personalized instruction than that. Students get to learn in person from an experienced performing / recording artist.

Personal Interests

I love the outdoors, hot sauces, all kinds of music, fly fishing, folklore, and history. I'm sort of a weather nerd, too :)
