I've lived and worked in Minneapolis, Minnesota, teaching special education to all ages, most recently to high school students. Also, I have taught environmental education in upstate New York, elementary education in Los Angeles, special education on reservation schools in the Bemidji, Minnesota, and English language learners (adults and children) in Barcelona, Spain.
I have always loved the environmental emphasis at Northland, as well as the smaller community sized campus. This allows students to feel that they belong in their environment. They can participate and become involved in campus life when they feel comfortable and an integral part of their college. I have lived and worked in small, intentional communities and have had great experiences. I also love the beautiful, natural look of the woods and creek surrounding the artistic buildings. Also, I have always heard wonderful things about Northland.
To involve students, I've always tried to listen to their needs and ask them questions that might bring out their unique ways of finding their own paths to involvement. It is very individual. Some students may want to form groups of like-minded students to talk to and plan with, some may enjoy joining existing activities. The key is for me to ask them about it, let them talk and encourage involvement when possible, and get a feel for what works for an individual. I have a very broad base of interests and experiences myself, so I can bring these ideas out if needed.
I am an avid skier, both cross country and downhill. I like to ice skate, hike, ride horses, bike and participate in other sports, such as broomball. Also, I paint in watercolor, participate in theatre, improv, and some music, including blues harmonica. Traveling is fun and I have done a bit in the USA and in Europe. Swimming and paddleboarding are also favorites of mine. I love animals and have a few right now.
