I am a proud member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. I previously worked for the National Park Service at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore for thirteen years before coming to Northland in 2011. I currently serves as the director of the Indigenous Cultures Center.
My personal and professional interests intersect in many ways, but most prominently in wanting to educate others about Indigenous cultures, historic and contemporary gender roles and identities, overcoming the challenges and expectations of native students in education, and strengthening leadership roles through traditional teachings. I strives to provide spaces where everyone feels safe and welcome to share, learn, and grow from diverse experiences and backgrounds.
Why NOT Northland? This cozy little campus in the north woods creates a family environment in which students can learn, grow, explore, and create a place for themselves in the world. All while finding tremendous support, outstanding and unique opportunities, and one of the most beautiful natural playgrounds in the world!
Students are able to pave their own paths of learning, leading, and growing, while still having a safe place to come for advice, support, encouragement, and a place to just be themselves. They are encouraged to step up, find their voices, share their diverse experiences, and support others as they walk along this next path in their journeys. I advise two identity-based student organizations on campus, on top of being involved in many facets of community outreach, event, and program planning.
When I am not teaching and sharing, I can be found exploring the beautiful woods and southern shores of Lake Superior, taking photos, doing beadwork, yelling loudly at Northland athletics events, or spending time with my adventure human as well as my rescue dog Huck.
