Wolf Awareness Week & Poster

October 16-22, 2022.

Each year Timber Wolf Alliance celebrates Wolf Awareness Week with a poster featuring a broad theme in wolf conservation. This year we plan to celebrate Sigurd Olson and the influence he had on wolf research and wolf conservation as our theme. This is in conjunction with the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute’s 50th year celebration.

The poster features an award-winning artist’s or photographer’s rendering of a wolf or wolves in their natural habitat. Below you can learn more about ordering posters, submitting artwork for the poster, and becoming a sponsor.

Wolf Awareness Week

In 1990, Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson signed the proclamation of Wisconsin Wolf Awareness Week, a time to celebrate these important animals by highlighting the threats to their survival, spreading the word about what you can do to help wolves stay protected, and helping humans learn to live alongside them. The Timber Wolf Alliance is proud to carry on this tradition each year.

We will be posting updates as the plans for this year’s Wolf Awareness Week activities are finalized. Please keep an eye on the Northland Events Calendar for details!

Want to support wolves? Consider a gift to the Timber Wolf Alliance to support the work we do.

Sponsorship Levels & Benefits

Be a Poster Sponsor

For 2022, TWA’s Wolf Awareness Week poster honors the 50th anniversary of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute and the legacy of Sigurd Olson. David Backes (Olson’s biographer) and wolf biologist L. David Mech contributed essays for the back of the poster, and both reflect on the influence that Sigurd Olson had on wolf research and conservation.

More than 6000 Wolf Awareness Week posters are distributed around the country each year, and your sponsorship of the posters helps to raise awareness about wolves and the fragile environments in which they live.

Several levels of sponsorship are available, and the due date is June 15, 2022. Please joins us as a sponsor for the 2022 poster.

For a pledge of $800+ you receive:

  • 1000 posters (plus 50 additional posters per $50 pledged above $800)
  • Logo placed prominently on the front of the poster

  • Name as a poster sponsor on the TWA webpage

For a pledge of $600 you receive:

The sponsorship and pre-order sales opportunity are closed for this year. Post-production posters can be ordered above.

Call for Poster Artwork

Each year Timber Wolf Alliance celebrates Wolf Awareness Week with events that feature a broad theme in wolf conservation. In line with this, we produce an informational poster featuring original art or photos. This year we plan to celebrate Sigurd Olson and the influence he had on wolf research and wolf conservation as our theme for the annual Wolf Awareness Week poster. This is in conjunction with the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute’s 50th year celebration. Sigurd Olson (1899-1982) was acknowledged during his lifetime as a leader of the American environmental movement, and as an emblematic figure for a generation of activists. He was a writer, teacher, and activist who was a harbinger of the raising of America’s ecological consciousness. Learn more about Sigurd Olson here.

Thus in 2022, we are seeking original art or photos that display wolves in a northern wilderness setting, such as the Boundary Waters area. However, we are grateful for any wolf art submissions. Please submit proposed artwork to the Timber Wolf Alliance by April 1, 2022 to: soei@northland.edu. We expect to select the poster art winner of the 2022 Wolf Awareness Week by May 1, 2022.

Each year we produce around 4000 posters that are distributed around the country.

Submission Deadline

  • April 1, 2022.

Competition Rules & Guidelines

  1. SUBJECT: Entries must have as their subject gray wolves in their native environments.
  2. REALISM: TWA is an organization dedicated to public awareness and education about wolves, and the image for the annual poster reaches thousands of people each year. For this reason, realism is preferred; accuracy in portrayal of wolves’ anatomy, pelage, and the surrounding habitat is critical.
  3. ACCEPTABLE MEDIA: All entries must be original artwork or photos, conceived and created by the entrant. If the artwork submitted to the contest is a depiction drawn from a photograph taken by someone other than the artist, the artist MUST notify TWA of the photographer’s name and address. Previously published work is also acceptable.
  4.  FORMAT OF SUBMISSIONS: All entries must be submitted as a digital file format. No hard-copy photographs will be accepted. Files should be saved in JPG or TIFF format and must be 24 inches wide by 18 inches high with a resolution of 300 pixels per inch. If you can not meet these requirements, the original artwork must be available for TWA to photograph.
  5. Submitting: Complete the entry form on this page and indicate your method of file delivery (FTP or mail). Each digital file, CD, or other digital media storage device must be labeled legibly with the entrant’s name, address, phone number, email, and artwork title and medium used.
  6. FTP ENTRIES: Files can be uploaded to an FTP file hosting service (e.g. Dropbox or WeTransfer). TWA does not provide FTP service—files must be sent though your FTP. If submitting more than one entry, save all entries into a single folder and provide the url sharing link to that folder within the entry form on this page. Image files attached to an email will not be considered.
  7. POSTAL ENTRIES: Save all entries on a single CD, DVD, or other external storage device. All entry materials (CD, DVD, or other digital storage devices) become property of TWA and will not be returned. TWA is not be responsible for the loss or damage of any images or digital storage devices submitted to the competition. Print a copy of the confirmation email you receive after submitting the entry form on this page and include it with your mail-in submission. Mail to: Timber Wolf Alliance Poster Contest, Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, 1411 Ellis Avenue, Northland College, Ashland, WI 54806
  8. JUDGING: All entries will be judged by the TWA poster committee and Advisory Council. There is no jury fee. Selection of the judges is entirely at the discretion of TWA. Entries will be judged on innovative handling of the subject, accuracy, mood, concept, craftsmanship, and reproducibility. The decision of the judges is final and may not be appealed.
  9. PRIZE: The winning artist will be awarded $500. TWA may request to use the winning artwork on t-shirts, for which the artist will receive an additional $100.
  10. RIGHTS: Copyright remains with the artist, with usage rights by the Timber Wolf Alliance for the poster, and any other subsequent use of artwork for promotional items.
  11. For color separation purposes, the art piece selected as the winning entry must be available in the original or in a large format digital file, at least 300 dpi at 100%, for an 18×24 inch poster. The final product is a poster format and not a fine art print format.
  12. Winning artists may be asked to provide pen and ink drawing(s) for the educational information on the back of the poster. Specifications will be discussed at that time. This piece(s) will be the property of the artist.
  13. TWA may ask the artist’s permission to use his/her winning artwork for t-shirts, for which the artist would receive an additional $100.00. Please indicate on the application form if you are interested in allowing such use of your artwork.
