Wolf Awareness Week and Poster

October 15-21, 2023.

In 2023, our Wolf Awareness Week programing will focus on the Endangered Species Act, which was adopted 50 years ago to protect critically imperiled species from extinction as a “consequence of economic growth and development untampered by adequate concern for conservation.”

There will be activities and speakers for Wolf Awareness Week relating to this theme. Scheduling updates and activities will be posted here, and also on the TWA Facebook page.

The poster features an award-winning artist’s or photographer’s rendering of a wolf or wolves in their natural habitat. Below you can learn more about ordering posters, submitting artwork for the poster, and becoming a sponsor.

Wolf Awareness Week

In 1990, Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson signed the proclamation of Wisconsin Wolf Awareness Week, a time to celebrate these important animals by highlighting the threats to their survival, spreading the word about what you can do to help wolves stay protected, and helping humans learn to live alongside them. The Timber Wolf Alliance is proud to carry on this tradition each year.

Want to support wolves? Consider a gift to the Timber Wolf Alliance to support the work we do.

Call for Poster Artwork

Each year the Timber Wolf Alliance’s Wolf Awareness Week poster celebrates a broad theme in wolf conservation. In 2022, we celebrated Sigurd Olson’s influence on wolf ecology and stewardship. In 2021, our theme was Wolves in Citizen Science. And, in 2020, we celebrated New Insights on Wolf Ecology & Stewardship. Wolf Awareness Week posters have been created by Timber Wolf Alliance since 1990.

In 2023, our Wolf Awareness Week programing will focus on the Endangered Species Act, which was adopted 50 years ago to protect critically imperiled species from extinction as a “consequence of economic growth and development untampered by adequate concern for conservation.”

To illustrate our 2023 Wolf Awareness Week poster, we seek art or photography that depicts wolves in their natural environments.

Please submit proposed art work to the Timber Wolf Alliance by March 31, 2023. We expect to select the winner of the 2023 Wolf Awareness Week by May 1, 2023.

Submission Deadline

  • March 31, 2023.

Competition Rules & Guidelines

  1. SUBJECT: Entries must have as their subject gray wolves in their native environments.
  2. REALISM: Timber Wolf Alliance is an organization dedicated to public awareness and education about wolves, and the image for the annual poster reaches thousands of people each year. For this reason, realism is preferred; accuracy in portrayal of wolves’ anatomy, pelage, and the surrounding habitat is critical.
  3. ACCEPTABLE MEDIA: All entries must be original artwork or photos, conceived and created by the entrant. If the artwork submitted to the contest is a depiction drawn from a photograph taken by someone other than the artist, the artist MUST notify Timber Wolf Alliance of the photographer’s name and address. Previously published work is also acceptable.
  4.  FORMAT OF SUBMISSIONS: All entries must be submitted as a digital file format. No hard-copy photographs will be accepted. Files should be saved in JPG or TIFF format and must be 24 inches wide by 18 inches high with a resolution of 300 pixels per inch. If you cannot meet these requirements, the original artwork must be available for Timber Wolf Alliance to photograph.
  5. Submitting: Complete the entry form on this page and indicate your method of file delivery (FTP or mail). Each digital file, CD, or other digital media storage device must be labeled legibly with the entrant’s name, address, phone number, email, and artwork title and medium used.
  6. FTP ENTRIES: Files can be uploaded to an FTP file hosting service (e.g. Dropbox or WeTransfer). Timber Wolf Alliance does not provide FTP service—files must be sent though your FTP. If submitting more than one entry, save all entries into a single folder and provide the URL sharing link to that folder within the entry form on this page. Image files attached to an email will not be considered.
  7. POSTAL ENTRIES: Save all entries on a single CD, DVD, or other external storage device. All entry materials (CD, DVD, or other digital storage devices) become property of TWA and will not be returned. TWA is not be responsible for the loss or damage of any images or digital storage devices submitted to the competition. Print a copy of the confirmation email you receive after submitting the entry form on this page and include it with your mail-in submission. Mail to: Timber Wolf Alliance Poster Contest, Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, 1411 Ellis Avenue, Northland College, Ashland, WI 54806
  8. JUDGING: All entries will be judged by the Timber Wolf Alliance poster committee and Advisory Council. There is no jury fee. Selection of the judges is entirely at the discretion of TWA. Entries will be judged on innovative handling of the subject, accuracy, mood, concept, craftsmanship, and reproducibility. The decision of the judges is final and may not be appealed.
  9. PRIZE: The winning artist will be awarded $500. TWA may request to use the winning artwork on t-shirts, for which the artist will receive an additional $100.
  10. RIGHTS: Copyright remains with the artist, with usage rights by the Timber Wolf Alliance for the poster, and any other subsequent use of artwork for promotional items.
  11. 11. For color separation purposes, the art piece selected as the winning entry must be available in the original or in a large format digital file, at least 300 dpi at 100%, for an 18×24-inch poster. The final product is a poster format and not a fine art print format.
  12. 12. Winning artists may be asked to provide pen and ink drawing(s) for the educational information on the back of the poster. Specifications will be discussed at that time. This piece(s) will be the property of the artist.
  13. Timber Wolf Alliance may ask the artist’s permission to use his/her winning artwork for t-shirts, for which the artist would receive an additional $100.00. Please indicate on the application form if you are interested in allowing such use of your artwork.
