DESCRIPTION:\nJoin us\, just miles from the shores of the Apostle Islands\, for the 20th Annual Student Outdoor Educators Conference Outdoor Apostles: Where Do We Go From Here? \nThe SOEC offers emerging outdoor education and recreation enthusiasts the opportunity to share\, teach\, and learn in a professional conference setting. Participate in outdoor educator skill development workshops and networking with other emerging professionals. SOEC draws students primarily from the Midwest region\, with a variety of backgrounds\, to share their experiences with the greater outdoor industry. \nMany of the opportunities associated with the event are only open to conference registrants\, but there are several opportunities open to the entire campus community. We would welcome you all to attend our Friday night film screening of 180 Degrees South: Conquerors of the Useless. This adventure documentary focuses on the journey of Jeff Johnson as he travels from California to Patagonia. The film emulates the 1968 trip made by Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins to Patagonia\, but rather than by land\, Jeff Johnson travels by sea from Mexico and south along the west coast of Chile. This film will be shown in the SOEI beginning at 7 pm. \nAdditionally we would invite you to participate in the adventure race Saturday Evening from 4pm to 5pm. For this event come with a team of 4-8 people to compete in a series of challenges related to outdoor skills. \n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Aldo Leopold\, Sigurd Olson\, Walt Bresette\, and You\nIn these times of rapid social and environmental change\, it is especially important that we take time to consider the conservation connections in our history\, and that we will need to make for the future. In the north country\, we are fortunate to be heirs to the legacies of Leopold\, Olson\, Bressette\, and so many more. Now the time has come for a new generation to build upon those legacies and to make new connections for the good of our planet\, our communities\, and the land that sustains us all. \nCurt Meine is a conservation biologist and writer based in Sauk County\, Wisconsin. He serves as senior fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation and Center for Humans and Nature; as research associate with the International Crane Foundation; and as adjunct associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served as on-screen guide in the Emmy Award-winning documentary film Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time (2011). Meine has authored and edited several books\, including the award-winning biography Aldo Leopold: His Life and Work (2010) and The Driftless Reader (2017). In his home landscape\, he is a founding member of the Sauk Prairie Conservation Alliance. \nThis event is hosted by the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute and the Northland College Natural Resources Department.

DESCRIPTION:First Friday Dances are a long-standing tradition at Northland\, offered by the Northland College Student Association for the Ashland Community. Join us to square dance the night away with a live band and a caller. Beginner and kids dancing will be at 7 pm and adult dancing will begin at 8 pm.
