Visiting a college you’re interested in is one of the best ways to get a sense of what a college is like and the experiences you may have as a student. When you visit Northland, you don’t only get to see our beautiful campus—you may qualify for a scholarship just for visiting.
Visiting seniors or incoming transfer students who apply for admission for the 2024–25 academic year and attend an officially-recognized on-campus visit through the Office of Admissions will qualify for a renewable scholarship of $1,000 toward their cost of attendance with Northland College.

If you looking for a quick, easy hike, you can’t do better than Houghton Falls. If you’re looking for something more challenging, and want to be rewarded with amazing views of Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands, hike to St. Peter’s Dome. If you’re into chasing waterfalls, make sure to check out Copper Falls State Park. Or, if biking is more your style, rent a bike from Bay City Cycles in Ashland and coast along the paved trail along the bay.
Good local food can be found all throughout the Chequamegon Bay region. Enjoy the vegan nachos at the Black Cat Coffeehouse in Ashland, satisfy your sweet tooth at Café Coco in Washburn, and grab a fresh ice cream sandwich at Tetzner’s Dairy on your way between the two!
There are dozens of great places to spend your money while in the area. Some of our favorites are outdoor outfitters Solstice Outdoors and Howl Adventure Center, the gaming store Play Unplugged, and Eckels Pottery.
If you’re looking for sand, sun, and easy access to Lake Superior, we recommend Friendly Valley, Meyers, Cornucopia, or Maslowski beaches—all within an hour of Northland’s campus! There are a few beaches closer to campus if you aren’t looking to travel too far, including a few spots in Ashland.
