Federal and State Grants

Need-based financial aid.

Grants, like scholarships, do not have to be repaid. Grants listed below are gift assistance awarded based on need. Every student’s application is reviewed for grant eligibility. One or more of the grants listed may be included in a financial aid package. To receive financial aid from federal and state programs, you must meet the following guidelines.

General Eligibility Requirements

Be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen.
If male, at least eighteen years of age, and born after December 31, 1959, be registered with the Selective Service.
Demonstrate financial need if applying for need-based aid.
Be working toward a degree or certificate at Northland College.
Make satisfactory academic progress as defined by Northland’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.
Not be in default on any loan or owe a refund on any grant made under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 9165, as amended, at any institution.

Federal Grants

PELL Grant
The Pell Grant is for students from low and middle income families who show financial need as determined by the FAFSA. Amounts are determined by the U.S. Department of Education. 2024–25 Federal Pell Grants can be up to $7,395.

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
The SEOG is available to undergraduates receiving a Pell Grant and demonstrate exceptional financial need and filed their FAFSA.

Wisconsin Grants and Scholarships

Academic Excellence Scholarship
The Academic Excellence Scholarships are awarded to Wisconsin high school seniors who have the highest grade point average in each public and private high school throughout the State of Wisconsin.

Hearing/Visually Handicapped Student Grant
The Handicapped Student Grant program was established to provide funding for undergraduate Wisconsin residents enrolled at in-state or eligible out-of-state public or independent institutions who show financial need and have a severe or profound hearing or visual impairment.

Indian Student Assistance Grant
Awards under the Indian Student Assistance program are made to Wisconsin residents who are at least 25 percent Native American and are undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in degree or certificate programs at colleges and universities in Wisconsin.

Talent Incentive Program Grant
The Talent Incentive Program (TIP) Grant provides grant assistance to the most financially-needy and educationally-disadvantaged Wisconsin resident students attending colleges and universities in Wisconsin.

Veteran’s Grant for Private Non-Profit Schools
The Wisconsin Veteran’s Grant for Private Non-Profit Schools provides grant assistance to Wisconsin residents who are enrolled in a bachelor’s or graduate degree program at a WI Association of Independent Colleges and Universities approved school. Students must hold a valid veteran status with the Department of Veterans Affairs office and apply to the payment of tuition for educational assistance programs. The student must maintain a cumulative GPA average of a 2.0 to qualify for this grant.

Wisconsin Grant Program
The Wisconsin Grant Program provides grant assistance to undergraduate Wisconsin residents enrolled at least half-time in degree or certificate programs at nonprofit, independent colleges or universities based in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Minority Retention Grants
Awards under the Wisconsin Minority Retention program are made to Wisconsin resident minority undergraduates, excluding first-year students, enrolled at least half time in independent, Tribal, or Wisconsin technical college institutions.
