When the first trustees and the newly elected Edward Wheeler laid the cornerstone of the North Wisconsin Academy, they heard these words: “An academy is not built of rock, or of granite, or of sandstone that hardens with exposure. You may launch it with fine appointments and striking architectures, but it is not an institution until you have endowed it with a deeper life.”
Today we certainly need to endow the college with students, and we know we need to endow the college with capital, but we must constantly renew the endowment of that deeper life that makes a college worthy of its name. The mission calls out to us, and calls us to succeed courageously in our efforts. Deep calls out to deep, as the scriptures say. The times call for depth: depth of vision and depth of understanding; depth of creativity and effort; depth of scholarship and wisdom.
So, let us pray for that deeper life that endows Northland College with its vitality and sense of purpose. And let us pray for President Marvin Suomi, that the spirit of God might bestow the depth of vision and wisdom as he takes his place of leadership among us. Grant him at depth that endows us with the deeper life we desperately need. Grant him and all who lead this institution the depth of understanding to clearly discern the challenges of the day; depth of resolve to persevere; depth of hope to know that our efforts are part of a worthy cause; and at the end of the day, depth of faith that beyond our successes or failures all things shall be well, all things shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well. Amen.
