Unearthing Wisconsin's Past
The ECHO and Northland College
The ECHO, Wisconsin’s historical newspaper, and Northland College have teamed up to showcase high school writers. Submit your article on historic Wisconsin and get the chance to be published in The ECHO and earn a $5,000 scholarship to Northland College.Listed below are basic criteria and suggestions for researching and writing historical articles.
- All articles should be researched and written on a historical topic within your community.
- Suggestions for historical topics include: historic landmarks, famous people, how your community was named and why it was settled, milestones in the history of your school and/or community, or even your family history.
- Please limit your articles to 2,000 words or less. Relevant photos can also be submitted and are encouraged.
- Local historical societies are recommended as a place to research your article and to find old photos. Make sure to credit all submitted photos.
A committee composed of members of The ECHO staff and Kevin Schanning, Ph.D., Northland College associate professor of sociology, will evaluate submissions and select outstanding articles for inclusion in future editions of the newspaper. High school students whose articles are selected for inclusion will gain statewide exposure and will be eligible for a $5,000 scholarship to Northland College in recognition of their accomplishment.
