Sustainability

Composting is one active way to create a reciprocal relationship with the environment. Instead of sending your table scraps to the landfill, where the food decomposes in trash, you can let your your apple cores and coffee grounds mature into a rich compost, which then returns their nutrients back into the earth. To find out more about how to compost go to howtocompost.org. Read More
Environmental Council
For thirty-five years, Northland College's goal has been to be the leading environmental liberal arts college. The Environmental Council-a team of faculty, staff, and students-has coordinated those sustainability efforts for over twenty years. The Council tracks issues of transportation, food systems and composting, landscaping, waste and recycling, and energy. The Northland College Student Association (NCSA) also takes a leadership role in helping the college walk its talk by funding a yearly campus sustainability project.
Environmental Council projects are managed by working groups created around central sustainability themes. They are:
- Building and Landscaping
- Energy
- Food
- Transportation
- Waste and Compost
Learn more about ways in which you can help us conserve energy and water and reduce emissions caused by transportation by downloading our Sustainability Tips Brochure (PDF).
