Required Health Insurance
Full-time students (excluding Evening Degree) will automatically be enrolled in an injury and sickness health insurance plan. This required plan is provided at a low cost ($355 per year) and is placed on the student bill during the fall semester. Please note that you may be eligible for reimbursement of the cost of the insurance premium through an employer-sponsored Flexible Spending Account. Consult with your tax professional or the IRS to determine eligibility. This nation-wide policy is underwritten by United Healthcare Student Resources and is considered their primary insurance coverage while any additional coverage, such as a family plan, is considered secondary coverage. The plan's effective dates are August 1, 2009-July 31, 2010. Insurance cards will be mailed directly to each student's Northland College address toward the end of September. Details of this plan are included in the brochure included in the summer mailing or can be viewed online at the United Healthcare Student Resources website. Search "Find My School's Plan" for Northland College.
The insurance plan covers $15,000 per illness and injury per year. This plan does not have a deductible and as a result, we encourage students to take advantage of health services as soon as they need assistance. The purpose of the plan is to minimize out-of-pocket health expenses for students and families, promote immediate access to medical support, and encourage students to stay enrolled through minor illness and injury. This plan minimizes payment complications as the Northland College Health Center is operated by a local health care provider, the Main Street Clinic, who services as the primary care provider. Many services are covered at 100% at both the Health Center and the Main Street Clinic. Highlighted benefits include age-appropriate immunizations, Flu vaccine, Meningitis vaccine, and the Gardasil vaccine. These services will be covered at 100% if they are received either at the NC Health Center or the Main Street Clinic. Also, minor illnesses such as strep, mono, ear infections, and bronchitis are covered at 100% if services are received either at the NC Health Center or the Main Street Clinic.
Services not performed at the NC Health Center or the Main Street Clinic will be paid at a lower level of benefits. In all other situations, reduced or lower benefits will be provided when an Out-of Network provider is used. This may also include any labs or x-rays performed at the Main Street Clinic that are outsourced for processing.
Due to possible eligibility infringements, the following students are eligible to opt out of this plan:
- Students currently insured under Badger Care
- Students currently insured under Tribal Care
- Student currently insured under GAMP (pertains to residents of Milwaukee)
- Students currently insured through a health care savings account (where the student is the primary insured)
To opt out, students must complete and return a waiver form available through the Northland College Business Office, by September 8, 2009. If the waiver is returned after this date, a student's account will be charged.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Health Center at (715) 682-1340.
