Admissions at Northland

Tools for learning

The Institute began Wilderness Education in the early 1990s to diversify the impact of environmental outreach in the Lake Superior basin. The Institute also wanted to build teacher and student capacity for change that would have a lasting impact in basin communities. The Institute can provide educational units for instructors to assist them in their classrooms.

Audio-Visual rental program

The Institute hosts a library of over 50 mixed media programs for community groups, schools and organizations. All audio-visual programs (VHS, slide shows and audio tape) are available by mail as part of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute's outreach program. Upon request, an Institute staff member may be able to present the program to interested groups. Travel expenses will be assessed.

Rental Fees are $10.00 per item. The renter supplies equipment. 30 days in advance of your requested need date, please make a reservation and send rental/handling fee. All videos are standard 1/2" VHS format. Slide Shows require a 35 mm carousel projector and with a connected cassette player, the slides advance automatically. With a non-connected cassette player, the slides must be advanced manually following an enclosed script.

Loon Activity Box

This educational kit is an experiential adventure focusing on participatory and personalized learning. Inside the box are a variety of activities and associated materials for teachers and students to learn about loon biology, ecology, and environmental issues. All contents have a planned activity, but can also be tailored to fit your classroom environment. Teacher-directed activities and discussions and student-directed station stops define the box's overall structure. Within all the activities are included student learner outcomes and a driving question. Every learning station is self-contained which allows the teacher to use all or just a selected number of activities in the classroom. The Loon Activity Box comes complete with a teacher's guide. Activities are most suitable for grades K-6, but some activities may be applicable to older age groups. Cost: $50.00/week rental fee, plus return shipping and insurance costs (approx. $10.00). Box can be shipped anywhere in the continental U.S., though many other state loon organizations have a similar activity box.
