Guided by the philosophy of writer and conservationist Sigurd F. Olson, the Institute:
The Institute's focus on restoration honors the interdependence of life by seeking to protect current ecological connections and rebuilding those that have been damaged. In cooperation with many other organizations, the Institute takes the lead in gathering resources and sponsoring research.
How can we live on this planet in a way that preserves its resources and its beauty for future generations? This seems like a simple question, but it is an important one facing our culture and civilization. Institute programs model different ways of thinking, working, and doing business that honor our commitment to the future of Lake Superior and northern forests, both dominant forces in our region. Institute programs work with communities to address environmental concerns by conducting outreach education, organizing citizen participation, and engaging technical expertise.
Sigurd Olson's legacy inspires people at many different levels. He was a scientist, educator, writer, and activist who publicized his personal beliefs and helped define contemporary understanding of wilderness values. To keep his legacy alive, the Institute introduces Olson to school children, nature center audiences, natural resource and outdoor education professionals, wilderness travelers, and citizens. In so doing, we strive to prepare the next generation of leaders in the ongoing effort to protect and preserve wilderness.
