Imagine a northern lake without the haunting calls and stately presence of the Common Loon.
It's a disturbing image for most of us,
but in some places, it's happening. Air and water pollution,
shoreline development, and increasing recreational activity
on lakes all pose serious threats to loons across North America,
and in some cases are responsible for loons disappearing from
their traditional nesting lakes.
LoonWatch, a program of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, is doing something about it. Our mission is to protect Common Loons and their aquatic habitats through education, monitoring, and research. Our primary focus is on Wisconsin, but our education and research activities extend to other areas in the Upper Great Lakes region such as Michigan and Minnesota. We also lend our support to work on a continental scale by reaching out and maintaining communication with loon conservation organizations across the United States and Canada.
