LoonWatch asks you to join us in welcoming our new coordinator, Amber Roth! Amber
comes from Rhinelander, WI where she worked for the Wisconsin DNR as
a research technician. Amber has a good deal of hands-on loon experience
from her
work, and is very excited to be joining the LoonWatch program.
Amber will be joining us during the second week of May, so keep your
eyes open for her at the upcoming events on the LoonWatch calendar!
The LoonWatch Advisory Council has choosen Meggin Weinandt of Northern Michigan University as the recipient of the 2005 Sigurd T. Olson Loon Research Award. Meggin's research, titled Assessing the Conservation Implications of Common Loon Parasites: Black Flies, Haematozoans, and the Loon Immune Response. Meggin's research will occur in two parts. First, she will study the chemical and visual cues used by certain species of black fly to identify their apparently exclusive food source--the Common Loon. The second part of her research will examine the blackflies ability to transmit blood parasites between loons and the resulting effects on the loon population. We look forward to reading her results!

LoonWatch is proud to announce Hank Krizman of Anchorage, Alaska as the winner of the 2005 Loon Appreciation Week Poster contest. Hank's image (at right) features a loon family with two chicks. Those who take a closer look at the picture will be interested to see that the two chicks are actually fighting with eachother--a common behavior as the siblings establish their pecking order and one that can lead to the death of the weaker chick.
