About LoonWatch

LoonWatch, a program of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, protects Common Loons and their aquatic habitats through education, monitoring, and research.

Our primary geographic focus is on Wisconsin, but our education and research activities extend to other areas in the Upper Great Lakes region such as Michigan and Minnesota. We also lend our support to work on a continental scale as an affiliate of the North American Loon Fund.A loon sitting on its nest.

Here's how we do it:

Education

LoonWatch staff and Speakers' Bureau volunteers provide educational loon programs to lake associations, school groups, and other organizations. We also provide scientific support and advice to county, state, and federal government agencies and produce Education Materials that are used by teachers, naturalists and anyone interested in learning more about loons and their habitats.

Monitoring

LoonWatch coordinates a network of volunteers who watch and record the activities of loons on Wisconsin lakes for our Annual Lake Monitoring Program. Every five years we organize volunteers to conduct a one-day count of adult and young loons on a select group of lakes for the Wisconsin Loon Population Survey.

Research

LoonWatch funds original loon research annually through the Sigurd T. Olson Loon Research Award.

In today's increasingly crowded world, loons and people must coexist on the same lakes. You can support LoonWatch and help protect loons by making a tax deductible Donation or by becoming a LoonWatch Volunteer. Volunteers are needed to monitor and protect loons on northern lakes and to provide public programs throughout the region. You can be an active voice for the loon and help ensure that loon music will be heard on our northern lakes in the future.
