Admissions at Northland

Land Stewardship and the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center

Northland College and the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center have been working together for many years. Past projects have included wetland restoration, sustainable agriculture demonstrations, and environmental education programs. During the summer of 2003, students created a GIS map illustrating several proposals for restoration near the Visitor Center . The map was used to communicate future plans to the Visitor Center 's Advisory Board, regional agency officials, and local citizens.

This year, students are providing additional GIS support for the nearby Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge. The US Fish and Wildlife Service is currently writing a long-term management plan for the Refuge (called a habitat management plan), and students have compiled a substantial amount of GIS information for the project. They will be creating several maps to illustrate historical land use, current land use, vegetation cover types, and possible management options for the Refuge.

Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute will continue to work with the Visitor Center and the Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge in the upcoming years on current and future projects. Opportunities include wetland monitoring, habitat management and restoration, GIS mapping and analysis, among other projects.
