Northland College invites public to ceremonial first pitch
May 13, 2010
Friends of the Fields, a recently formed group consisting of Northland College and Ashland High School coaching staff, community members and Northland alumni, has announced the purchase of a new field maintenance vehicle that will be used to maintain the ball fields at the College. In recognition of the work of Friends of the Fields, the public is invited to attend a ceremony before the Ashland High School baseball game against Park Falls on Monday, May 17. Friends of the Field supporter Rollie Hicks and Bob Lulich of Lulich Implement, Mason, Wis., will both throw out ceremonial first pitches to celebrate the recent purchase.
Friends of the Fields is committed to raising funds that will maintain and help improve the Northland College ball fields for the benefit of the entire community. The purchase of a New Holland Rustler was made possible through the generosity of a donor and sponsorship of Lulich Implement.
“Friends of the Fields was started by interested members of Northland College, the Ashland High School and local community,” said Marc Barbeau, vice president for Institutional Advancement. “In a short amount of time, this group has demonstrated that by working together we can accomplish much that has an impact on the quality of life for our community. It’s about working together for everyone’ s benefit and not only the college’s benefit. It’s about Ashland.”
In addition to providing a home to Northland baseball, softball and soccer teams, the college fields are used by Ashland high school and community teams. The acquisition of the new machinery will aid in the ongoing maintenance of the fields, ensuring they will continue to serve as a valuable community resource.
"Northland is blessed to have baseball and softball facilities,” said Steve Wammer, director of athletics at Northland. “I have always believed that it is important that the facilities like these benefit as many athletes as possible. A group like Friends of the Fields help us to keep our fields in first-rate condition and allow us to share their use with the Ashland community."
