Chequamegon Bay Area Partnership receives development grant
March 17, 2010
The Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute of Northland College today announced that it has received a $3,000 grant from the Plum Creek Foundation to help fund technology upgrades for the Chequamegon Bay Area Partnership.
Currently, the institute and the college are providing leadership and institutional support to the emerging Chequamegon Bay Area Partnership, including hosting meetings and providing technology support. The partnership is a local coalition of partner agencies, both governmental and non-governmental, across the south shore of Lake Superior at the Chequamegon Bay that are tackling environmental issues affecting the near-shore waters of Lake Superior and the associated watersheds. The goal of the partnership is to work together to keep the Chequamegon Bay a pristine area for the sensitive species of fish and wildlife that currently reside here, and to correct environmental problems that pressure this ecosystem. The Plum Creek Foundation will be used to help fund the purchase of a new laptop and projector for the meeting room.
“The Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute has a long-term commitment to education, research and citizen involvement,” said Grant Herman, director of the institute. “Improved technology and equipment will increase the capacity of the institute to carry out our environmental mission through educational outreach to the community and partners.”
The Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute of Northland College strives to address the complex environmental issues of our time. Through courses, internships and projects that support regional environmental efforts, the institute encourages student learning in ways that have a positive impact on nature.
The mission of the Plum Creek Foundation is to provide philanthropic contributions to support and improve the general welfare of life in the communities that Plum Creek serves. The Foundation board meets quarterly to review applications submitted from organizations in the company’s operating communities. Visit the Community Involvement page on Plum Creek’s Web site at www.plumcreek.com to download an application.
