Northland College and the University of Wisconsin Colleges sign articulation agreement
March 11, 2010
Northland College, in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin (UW) Colleges, has announced an articulation agreement that will strengthen education opportunities for college students statewide. The agreement, signed at Northland College, guarantees junior year status to students from the University of Wisconsin Colleges who have completed an Associate of Arts or Science degree and who are admitted to Northland College.
Paul W. Chase, Dean and Campus Executive Officer at UW-Barron County, said that the agreement provides an excellent option for students enrolled in the UW Colleges. “Promising students who start their academic careers at one of our thirteen campuses or in our on-line associate degree program can achieve a smooth transition to Northland’s unique academic program and educational opportunities,” he said. “For students who value a liberal arts emphasis and interdisciplinary approach in a small campus environment, Northland is absolutely the right choice for them.”
James L. Peterson, president of Northland College, hailed the agreement as an important step in strengthening the future of students throughout Wisconsin. “In 2010, higher education has become a more valuable commodity than ever before,” he said. “Our partnership with the University of Wisconsin Colleges encourages students across the state to build upon the excellent foundation they received at the UW Colleges.”
As part of the articulation agreement, Northland College scholarships of up to $10,000 will be awarded to any UW Colleges student enrolling under the agreement who has met cumulative GPA requirements and holds full-time status at Northland College.
“We are proud to recognize the accomplishments of the best and the brightest students graduating from the University of Wisconsin Colleges,” said Rick Fairbanks, vice president of academic affairs and provost of Northland College. “By awarding scholarships to students who have demonstrated academic excellence, we are able to ensure that completing their education at Northland College remains an affordable option.”
Representatives from both institutions were present for the signing, which took place following a brief ceremony at Northland College on March 4. Signing on behalf of UW Colleges were Chancellor of UW Colleges David Wilson, and Dean and Campus Executive Officer of UW-Barron County Paul W. Chase. President James L. Peterson and Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost Rick Fairbanks signed on behalf of Northland College. The articulation agreement runs from September 2009 through September 2014.
Northland College and its Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute are located in Ashland, Wis., near the shores of Lake Superior. Northland’s distinctive environmental liberal arts program, passionate faculty, and beautiful natural location create a community of engaged learners who develop the skills and experience to prepare for advanced studies and meaningful lives. Founded in 1892, Northland enrolls 700 students from across the nation and across the world. For more information about Northland College and its Institute, visit www.northland.edu.
