Northland launches new Web site for Eco-Visionary Program
August 18, 2008
The Eco-Visionary Program (EVP) at Northland College has launched a new Web site for people interested in the environment. Visitors to the site can learn ways to be more eco-friendly, post stories about what they are doing to reduce their impact on the planet and make their own pledge to protect the environment.
"The new EVP Web site is a powerful social networking tool for people interested in changing the world," says Karen I. Halbersleben, president of Northland College. "It's a place for environmentalists to make connections outside of their own communities and see how people across the country are getting involved and working to protect the earth. Online communities like this are helping to make environmentalism a world-wide movement and Northland is proud to be a part of that process."
The site, located at evp.northland.edu, offers a variety of information about environmental issues. The home page and "stories" section present feature articles and photographs about ways that real people and organizations are reducing their impact on the planet, from installing solar panels to recycling cell phones and building environmentally friendly housing. In addition to reading articles on the site, visitors can also share their own stories about protecting the environment by submitting articles and photographs. To submit an article, go to the "stories" section of the site and click "Submit your story."
Visitors to the site can also make a pledge to be an eco-visionary and change their own habits in an effort to be more sustainable. Making a pledge is free and those that do have their profile added to the "pledge wall," a list of eco-visionaries and their personal promises to protect the environment. Pledges range from agreeing to ride a bicycle whenever possible and reusing shopping bags to starting a recycling project in your local community.
