Award winning author to lead writing workshop
April 3, 2009
Award winning author and journalist Jerry Dennis will be leading a three-day writing workshop, titled "Untangling Lines: The Art of Writing with Jerry Dennis," at the newly renovated Cable Natural History Museum in Cable, Wis., beginning June 11. The workshop, which is sponsored and organized by the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute and Northland College, will allow writers of all levels to develop their craft and creativity in a small community of ten peers. The focused workshop environment will provide opportunities for guided writing exercises, presentations on the editing and revision process, and a consideration of Sigurd Olson's singular literary legacy. There will be opportunities for individual conferences with the author, as well as peer sharing and review, providing ample chance for participants to polish existing works, or create new ones.
"Your class was gentle, loving, thoughtful, wise, funny, honest, fair," said a former student. "You lead with humility...a subtle urging. Your integrity gave each of us an anchor of respect and equal treatment...I
am inspired to write more. You've given me permission to explore my life more broadly."
Dennis, an avid outdoorsmen and angler, has been a freelance writer for twenty years. His award-winning essays have appeared in such publications as The New York Times, Smithsonian, Field and Stream,
Sports Afield, and Gray's Sporting Journal, and are frequently reprinted and anthologized. His books-including "A Place on the Water," "The River Home," "From a Wooden Canoe," and "The Living Great Lakes"-have been translated into five languages and have won the Sigurd Olson Nature Writing Award and many other honors.
In addition to intense writing work, the ten participants will have a chance to experience the natural beauty of the area. Depending on the winter, the workshop dates may coincide with the peak of the Sulpher hatch and the beginning of the Brown Drakes. Time will be allotted during the evenings for angling, and guided fishing trips will be available the days preceding and following the workshop for participants wishing to extend their time on the water.
Anyone interested in learning more about the workshop should visit www.northland.edu/untanglinglines for a full schedule and registration information.
