Northland singers to present "Music for a Sacred Space"
March 6, 2009
Vocal musicians from Northland College will perform "Music for a Sacred Space," a concert of religious music, on Friday, March 13. The event will be held at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Ashland, Wis., beginning at 7:30 p.m. and will be open to the public free of charge.
The event will include performances by the Lumberjack Chorus, the Chamber Choir and the Northland Singers directed by Assistant Professor of Music Jared Anderson. The concert will also feature performances by the Accidentals under the direction of Donalee Brevak. This year's concert will feature music from Africa, Europe and early America. Composers will include Gerald Finzi, Joseph Haydn, Gustave Holst, Stephen Paulus, Hans Leo Hassler, C.V. Stanford and Rene Clausen.
"The choirs of Northland College are excited to perform 'Music for a Sacred Space,' which has become a musical tradition in Ashland over the past four years," says Anderson. "Both Northland Singers and the Northland College Chamber Choir will be performing parts of the repertoire that they will take on a regional tour over spring break in April. The music is very diverse, from places as far away as Kenya or Renaissance Germany, with styles that range from old American Sacred Harp Singing to music based loosely on a First Nation tune from Canada. There will be a little of something for everyone."
