39th Annual Northland College Spring Powwow
March 21, 2013
The Northland College Native American Student Association will host the 39th Annual Northland College Spring Powwow on Saturday, March 23. Grand entries will begin at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Kendrigan Gymnasium at Northland College. A community feast will take place at 5 p.m. The powwow is part of Indigenous Cultures Awareness Month at Northland College. The event is free and open to the public.
"Northland has invited dancers and drummers from regional tribes across northwestern Wisconsin and northeastern Minnesota, including the Lac Courte Oreilles, Fond du Lac, Mille Lacs, Red Lake, Bad River and Red Cliff tribes," says Katrina Werchouski, Northland College Coordinator for Multicultural Affairs and Native American and Indigenous Cultures Center Fellow. "The powwow is just one example of efforts to promote education and cultural exchanges that uphold traditions, ceremonies, languages and arts of Native American culture in the region."
Emcees for the event will be Marin Webster Denning of the Oneida nation and Larry "Amik" Smallwood of the Mille Lacs Band. Educational materials will be provided about the various aspects of the powwow and cultural traditions. Northland College radio station WRNC-LPFM (97.7) will offer a live broadcast of the event from 7 to 9 p.m. People may stream the event online at www.wrnclp.org and more information can be found online at www.northland.edu/naicc.
The powwow is sponsored by the Native American and Indigenous Cultures Center, Northland College Native American Student Association, Northland College Multicultural Office, Northland College Student Association, WRNC-LPFM (97.7) and Otto Bremer Foundation.
