Northland College to add golf in Fall 2013
September 25, 2012
Northland College Director of Athletics Bill Wilson announced today that the college will add men's and women's golf to its athletics program offerings in Fall 2013."This is a very exciting time for Northland College Athletics as we add men's and women's golf as intercollegiate sports. As a department, we are driven to provide as many opportunities as we can for our students," said Wilson. "At this juncture, golf is a perfect fit for us. Northland's golf programs will provide a great opportunity, particularly for many high school golfers in Wisconsin and Minnesota, to continue their playing careers while getting a great, affordable college education."
Northland College, a member of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), will now have the opportunity to compete in golf with several UMAC schools. Northland will compete with Martin Luther College, Northwestern College, Crown College, North Central University, Bethany Lutheran College, the College of Saint Scholastica and the University of Minnesota - Morris. The addition of golf benefits not only Northland student-athletes but the conference as well.
"As a conference, we desire to see our institutions continue to increase their sports offerings as this aligns with the NCAA Division III Philosophy of providing diverse opportunities for student-athletes," said Corey Borchardt, UMAC Commissioner. Northland's announcement of the addition of men's and women's golf is a positive development not only for the Northland Athletic Department and their campus community, but also for the conference as it will help increase sponsorship in a sport where the UMAC is trying to grow. I am excited to see additional students at Northland enjoy a Division III athletics experience as part of their overall campus involvement."
The college is finalizing details with a local golf course to provide a home course for the new teams.
