Northland College radio station 97.7 WRNC-LP temporarily off-air
July 31, 2012
The Northland College radio station, 97.7 WRNC-LPFM, is temporarily off the air. The noncommercial educational station typically broadcasts at 100 watts to the Ashland area.
A lightning storm on Sunday, July 29, is believed to have caused a power surge that resulted in the failure of the station's radio transmitter, according to WRNC Station Manager Danielle Kaeding.
"The staff at Northland College are working hard to get WRNC back on the air as soon as possible," Kaeding said. "We have reached out to community volunteers, friends and partners to address the problem and keep people informed of the matter."
WRNC typically broadcasts a 24-hour daily mix of progressive talk, news and music programming. Kaeding said the station may be back on the air by the end of the week.
"Our partners at Wisconsin Public Radio and friends with the Educational Communications Board have made a generous offer to loan the college a transmitter until WRNC can secure a suitable replacement," Kaeding said. "We are grateful to our friends, volunteers, partners and listeners who have shown us their support and patience during this time."
In the meantime, WRNC programming remains available for online streaming on the station's website at www.wrnclp.org. WRNC is operated and run by Northland College staff, students and community volunteers. Public radio programs carried by the Northland College radio station include Democracy Now, Free Speech Radio News, Radiolab and more. A full listing of programs and shows aired on WRNC can be found on the station's website. WRNC has operated as a licensed low power station offering community radio programming to the Ashland area since 2005.
