Northland student debuts artwork in Northland exhibit
April 27, 2012
Northland College senior Emily Schlager will debut her exhibit entitled "Play With Your Food" in an art reception on May 4. The reception will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Mary Van Evera Visual Arts Center at Northland College. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Schlager's exhibit will feature the result of four years of her art education at Northland College. The display will include prints, charcoal drawings, ceramics, and film photography. "Play With Your Food" examines the visual, tactile and conceptual ties between art and food, with some pieces reflecting an interest in the political side of sustainable agriculture. In addition, Schlager's artwork explores how the textures and objects found on farms respond to different art forms, including ceramics.
"The body of ceramic work in this show is both highly textured and functional, so it is important that viewers have the opportunity to fully experience the pieces-the feel, function, and look of them," says Schlager, adding, "I want to encourage people, whatever their interests or occupations, to view art and food as processes that are enjoyable and participatory rather than as grocery lists or galleries."
Schlager's exhibit is on public display from May 2 through May 16.
