Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra presents Beethoven concert
April 5, 2012
The Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra will perform an evening of Beethoven's music on Saturday, April 14. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Presbyterian-Congregational Church in Ashland. The event, another offering in the Northland College Community Connections series, is open to the public.
The program will feature Beethoven works, including "Leonore Overture No. 3." The overture is one of four that Beethoven wrote for the opera "Fidelio." In addition, the orchestra will perform Beethoven's "Fifth Symphony in C Minor" among other selections. The program is dedicated to the memory of former Chequamegon Symphony Principal Trumpet Player Jim Ollis.
"The orchestral and choral forces have worked throughout the winter months to prepare this very big program and are looking very eagerly forward to this event," says Conductor Joel Glickman, music director at Northland College. "Regarding the dedication of the program, Jim Ollis was a special friend to Northland College and a very special musician who served the orchestra and numerous bands."
Glickman notes that "Leonore No. 3" holds special significance as part of the program dedication.
"In the middle of this very dramatic and dynamic little masterpiece, there are two off-stage trumpet calls which are played by Trevor Thornton, our current principal trumpet player," says Glickman. "This seems a great way to reconnect with Jim and to acknowledge the lineage that each chair of each instrument in the orchestra possesses as the years unfold and highlight the connection among musicians - even among players who never knew one another."
General admission costs for the concert are $5 while area students may attend for one dollar. Northland students, faculty and staff receive free admittance.
