Northland student debuts artwork in public exhibit at the Black Cat
March 30, 2012
Mary Schaubschlager, Northland College senior and local artist, will hold a public reception for her exhibit "Many Moving Parts" on Friday, April 13. The reception will be held at 5 p.m. at the Black Cat Coffeehouse in Ashland. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibit features work created throughout a four-year student career, including painted, printed, graphite, and charcoal pieces. "Many Moving Parts" displays an exploration of self and offers to share discoveries with viewers.
The artwork on display is of a highly personal nature that results in a collective self-portrait that encompasses friends, homes, thoughts, and anxieties.
"During my time at Northland I have experienced a period of drastic growth, and I have become more aware of my dynamic nature. I have many moving parts, and I am constantly changing," says Schaubschlager.
Featured artwork will include more recent pieces that provide insights Schaubschlager has gained through exploring the process of printmaking and exploring self as a machine.
"My ‘Control Yourself' artwork series begins to discuss the result of understanding myself in a mechanical way and introduces the idea of self control," says Schaubschlager. "These ideas of control, process, and mechanics are also entangled in printmaking as a medium."
"Many Moving Parts" will be on display through April 14.
