Northland radio station 97.7 WRNC presents three evenings of holiday specials

Northland College radio station 97.7 WRNC will air a series of radio specials on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve to celebrate the holiday season.

On Christmas Eve, WRNC kicks off the evening with a recording of the Northland College Winds performing their seasonal concert "Traditions of Faith and Spirit" at 7 p.m. David Saetre, Campus Minister at Northland College, offers reflections and poetry that coincide with seasonal performances, such as George Frideric Handel's "Messiah." The concert will be followed by a reading of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" by Quicksilver Radio Theater from New York.

On Dec. 25, Big Top Chautauqua's Blue Canvas Orchestra will start off the evening at 7 p.m. with their performance of "A Blue Canvas Christmas." Host Michael Perry brings humor to the holiday season and the Blue Canvas Orchestra performs versions of "Up on the Housetop," "Silent Night," "Joy to the World" and other Christmas classics. Following, an hour of "Holiday Standard Time" with Michael Feinstein from WNYC radio in New York will present holiday songs from Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney and more.

On New Year's Eve, welcome the New Year with an hour of leftover Christmas tunes and rhythm and blues songs to ring in 2012 with the program "Juke in the Back" with Matt the Cat. Listeners will hear songs from Charlie Parker, the King Cole Trio, Ella Fitzgerald and more. Also, WRNC presents an hour of festive songs from "Afterglow," a weekly one-hour program of jazz and American popular song from Indiana Public Media. The radio special from "Afterglow" features lesser-known New Year's songs, as well as hits from Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and more.
